In the middle of my social foundations class when Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s “the swing” popped up on the projector I literally ecstatically exclaimed “Tangled!” then after unfortunate class-wide blank stares mumbled “concept art… promotions… contoversy…” later I sent my teacher an email with these images saying:
I just wanted to provide context for an outburst of mine a while back.
Remember when you showed us Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s “the swing?” Well even if you don’t I interjected something about “Tangled.”
“Tangled” is Disney’s recent adaptation of the Rapunzel fairy tale. One of its more controversial concept art pieces that was circulated before the film was released was a picture of Rapunzel on the swing; people thought this indicative of the film being too risque.
In fact it was a mere declaration that its foresty background would echo Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s painting. It turns out another concept of the swing and tree alone at a different angle was also made.
Pictures attached (all by Disney concept artist Lisa Keene - except for the original swing of course).
Just in case curiosity had even flitted in your brain.
His response, very liberal-arts-proffessor-like, was:
Thanks, [merverb]. No, I didn’t remember that, but it’s intriguing to see how the Disney artist deeroticizes the image…..
I didn’t send a response, but I wanted to say HEY! Disney’s got eroticism! Sure, Flynn isn’t looking up her skirt in that image because his character design wasn’t devolped yet but I’m sure they’re doing it now! (Major Fanart request here haha!) Um, plus hello epic concept art? YOU GOING DOWN
And there you have it.
